When a careful approach is taken during the design and sizing of a SUDS retention tank the settlement of solids can effectively reduce carry over into a receiving water course through long wet periods. Tank sizing can be governed by a restriction on this solids consent and cause engineers to build large tanks with reduced velocities in order to maintain the required settlement characteristics.
The HydroMESI is constructed within the surface water SUDS development. As the flows enter the unit, the lamellae plates automatically incline to the correct angle for optimum settlement of particles. As the flow passes through the tank, the suspended particles are settled on the plates. The flow passes into the watercourse with a large reduction of solid matter. When the flow stops and the tank empties, the plates return to the vertical position, ensuring that the remaining sediments are dropped into the chamber sump for removal.
